D.ieu commande à Moïse de recevoir des Enfants d’Israël de l’huile d’olive pure pour alimenter la « flamme perpétuelle » de la Ménorah, que Aharon devra allumer chaque jour, « du soir jusqu’au matin ».

Les vêtements sacerdotaux que les Cohanim (prêtres) devaient porter lors de leur service dans le sanctuaire sont décrits. Tous les Cohanim portaient : 1. la ketonet – une tunique de lin, 2. les mikhnassayim – pantalons de lin, 3. la mitsnefet ou migbaat – un turban de lin, 4. la avnet – une longue ceinture portée au dessus de la taille.

En plus de ces habits, le Cohen Gadol (le « grand prêtre ») portait : 5. le efod – une sorte de tablier, tissé de fils de laine et de lin teints d’azur, de pourpre et d’écarlate et de fils d’or, 6. le ‘hochen – un pectoral comportant douze pierres précieuses gravées aux noms des douze tribus d’Israël, 7. le mé’il – une cape de laine bleue, avec des clochettes en or et des ornements en forme de grenade à sa lisière, 8. le tsits – une plaque d’or portée sur le front comportant l’inscription « Saint pour D.ieu »

In 1980, Israel and Egypt exchanged ambassadors, marking a new era of cordial, if cold, diplomacy. In 1973, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat had orchestrated an attack on Israel in the Yom Kippur War, but after suffering defeat he became resigned to Israel's existence. In 1978, Sadat and Menachem Begin signed the Camp David Peace Agreement, for which they received the Nobel Peace Prize. Much of the Arab world was outraged by Sadat's overtures toward Israel, and he was assassinated by a Muslim extremist in 1981.

La voix de la Torah et la foi en la Torah

D.ieu termina Sa description des rites d’intronisation en nommant le Tabernacle la « Tente de la Rencontre ». Nous devons observer le Chabbat et les jours de Fêtes, mais nous devons concurrencer dans les affaires des gens qui n’ont pas ces obligations. Avant d’aller travailler le matin, nous devons prier et étudier la Torah. Au beau milieu de notre journée de travail, nous devons nous interrompre et prier à nouveau. Lorsqu’enfin nous rentrons à la maison le soir, il y a encore une autre prière à réciter. Au travail, nous devons veiller à demeurer à distance de la malhonnêteté ou de pratiques commerciales illégales. Il nous est même interdit de nous associer à l’entreprise de quelqu’un d’autre dans nombre de circonstances. Comment pouvons-nous survivre dans ces conditions ? »

D.ieu répond : «Je vous ai fait sortir d’Égypte. Jusqu’alors, pas un seul esclave n’avait réussi à s’échapper d’Égypte. Pourtant, J’ai libéré plusieurs millions de vous et Je vous ai comblés de grandes richesses. Vous voyez donc que Je ne suis pas lié par les limites naturelles. Si vous vous acquittez de Mes directives, Je vous récompenserai de façon surnaturelle et Je ferai en sorte que vous ayez ce dont vous avez besoin en abondance. »¹

The absence of Moshe’s name in Parshat Tetsave

It is a well-known observation that, from the beginning of Exodus until the beginning of Deuteronomy, there is not a Parashah in which Moses is not mentioned, except for Parashat Tetzaveh, which is always read close to the seventh day of Adar, the anniversary of Moses’s death. The Torah seems to go out of its way in order to avoid calling Moses by name. Instead, three times he is addressed with the woThe repetition of ve’atah is puzzling: Why eschew Moses’s name, and why now? Also, what is the connection to the 7th of Adar?rd ve’atah–“and you”:

Thus, in Parashat Tetzaveh, which focuses on the operation of the Mishkan that will unite the people with Hashem, and which is read close to the 7th of Adar, Moses’s name is submerged. In the 40 years since the sin of the golden calf, Moses Rabbeinu (Moses our Teacher) will have succeeded in imparting to the people of Israel the great lesson–how to survive his death. Then, the Children of Israel will be sufficiently adult that they will be able to accept the separation, and mourn, and move on.

Parashat Tetzaveh, where “Moses” becomes ve’atah, foreshadows the time when the quintessential leader named Moses will no longer be, but his essence will always persist.

Which parashiyot in the Torah don’t have Moshe’s name in them?

This week’s parasha (Tetsave) is the first parasha since Shemot (he is obviously not mentioned in Sefer Bereshit) that does not have Moshe’s name in it. The others are 4 ½ consecutive parashiyot in Devarim: Ekev, Re’eh, Shoftim, Ki Tetze, and then his name reappears toward the end of Ki Tavo. Those 4 parashiyot begin with Moshe giving a speech that continues through those 4 ½ parashiyot so there is no reason to say his name in the interim. Similarly, in our parasha, this is a continuation of the last parasha, Teruma. Moshe is commanded there, what to do for the Mishkan, and this simply continues straight through our parasha without needing to say his name again.

Chaim Yankel was a new father! His wife Ruchie decided to leave the new baby with him for the day while she went out to do some shopping. When Ruchie returned, she went to check on the baby. The smell was overpowering. She found the disposable diaper full and leaking. She was furious!

She confronted her husband, "Chaim Yankel! What’s the matter with you? Didn't you bother to check the baby's diaper all day?"

Chaim Yankel responded, "Why you are so angry! The box says it's good for up to eight pounds!"
