Hebrew month of Elul
From the beginning of the Hebrew month of Elul until Yom Kippur ,is a 40 days period that our Hakhamin tell us are days of mercy and forgiveness.It was in the beginning of the month of Elul when Moshe Rabeinu ascended mount Sinai to plead from the Almighty to forgive Benei Israel for the grave sin of the Golden Calf Idolatery.Fourty days later , on Yom Kippur ,Moshe's prayer ere answered and G-D announces his forgiveness
" Salahti Kidbareikha ".
Therefore Moshe rabeinu prepare those days for eternity,for Jews to come to G-D and ask forgiveness for the sins they commit during the year.During these forty days period we are to prepare ourselves to the High Holidays of" Rosh Hashana & Yom Kippur "by making Teshuba (Repentance),by being humble in order to come back to G-D ,by waking up early to pray Selihot (plea for forgiveness) with the congregation,recite the Shema before going to sleep,In one of the 19 blessings of the Amida ,there is the one which we ask G-D for repentance" Hashibeinu "it is good to insert before the conclusion of this blessing the names of people who have strayed from the proper path of observance,It is also a good tradition to check our Meauzot & Tefilin , if they have not been checked for the last seven years according to strict Halakha.
There is a famous lesson that each first letter of Elul stands for Ani Ledodi Vedodi Li, which means I am for my beloved(which is G-D )and my beloved for me,and in that verse there is four letters Yud which had the numerical value of fourty.which represents this period.In general one must raise his level of observance during these fourty days,and in the merit of our efforts,we should be deserving ,a year of peace and happiness for ourselves,our families and our community ,Amen
