Kipur Eve

On Erev Kippur it is a mitzva to eat more than usual. Traditionally it is taught that one who eats an extra amount receives credit as if he fasted the entire day before Kippur. It is also proper to ask forgiveness from anyone we may have hurt, financially, emotionally, or otherwise. This is because Yom Kippur does not have the power to forgive us for those sins, only the person we hurt can forgive us.

Schedule for Kippur eve:

Minha before Kippur has very special prayers with a special Amida only recited once per year. One should make every effort to come to Synagogue and say this prayer with a Minyan. It is also customary to light candles in memorial of loved ones, which are usually available in the Synagogue at this time. We wear Tefillin at this Minha prayer. One of the reasons is to make up for a possible missed Tefillin day during the year. We also say a Viduy (Confession of sins) in the Amida of this last prayer before the day of atonement. One of the reasons given for this pre-Kippur confession is in case one chokes at the last supper before Kippur and cannot make it to synagogue on Kippur.

Yom Kippur begins at sunset;

This includes the 5 forbidden activities:

1-No eating, or drinking

2-No bathing

3-No anointing,

4-not to wear leather shoes

5-No marital relations

From this time, one must also follow the laws of Shabbat (39 forbidden labors). There is a requirement to start these restrictions and accept the holiness of Shabbat and Kippur on oneself voluntarily even before sunset. This can be done any amount of time prior to sunset. There is no set quantitative requirement on how much earlier than sunset one must accept the onset of Kippur. Five to ten minutes is customary. It is not recommended to add too much time as that is not necessary.

There is also a custom to light the Shabbat/ Kippur candles about 18-20 minutes before sunset. One does not need to stop eating or using electricity at this time. Some recite the blessing on the candles

.

One then comes to Synagogue to pray Arvit and Kal Nidre. We place the Talet for Arvit. One may only make the Beracha on the Talet before sunset, so one should stop eating early enough to get to Synagogue on time to make the Beracha. If one was not able to put on their Talet by this time, they may put on the Talet but may not recite the blessing.

Pop Quiz: Looking pretty

Q: I just got married and want to wash my face on Kippur. If not my new husband will see my face with crust and such. Am I allowed to wash my face so I can look pretty to him?

A: Rambam teaches the halacha that a bride within 30 days is allowed to wash her face even on Yom Kippur so that she looks pretty for her husband. Now the question to figure out is whether a man can wash his face to look handsome for his wife? Or are all men ugly no matter what they do so it doesn’t really matter?

INTERDICTIONS A KIPPOUR :

Il y a cinq domaines d’agrément que nous évitons à Yom Kippour, depuis le coucher du soleil la veille de la fête jusqu’à la tombée de la nuit le lendemain

  1. Manger et boire

  2. Porter des chaussures en cuir

  3. Se baigner ou se laver

  4. S’appliquer des crèmes et des lotions

  5. Avoir toute forme d’intimité conjugale
