Profile of our Member: Rita Guindi by GET

Rita was born in Lebanon where she was a stellar student of the Alliance Israélite de Beyrouth. Accompanied by her younger sister, she landed in Montreal in 1969 thanks to the invaluable help of the Jewish Immigrant Aid Society (JIAS) who provided them with legal travel documents, for which they were forever grateful.

She arrived with a teaching degree but continued to enrich her standing with certificates in education obtained at the Université de Montréal. A busy young woman, in order to give back to the community, she taught basic French to new immigrants, referred to her by the JIAS, on the week-ends, even though she had just started her long teaching career at JPPS.

A progressive teacher, together with her colleague, Dyna Ryba, they published a series of French grammar books: “Voulez-vous apprendre le français?” that are being widely used in Quebec and elsewhere. This earned her the impressive Médaille du Rayonnement de la Culture Française, awarded by the French government for enhancing the culture and teaching of the French language.

A French teacher at JPPS for more than 40 years and coordinator of the French department, Mme Guindi received the prestigious Nachum Wilchesky Memorial Educational Leadership Award, in 2011 for her “devotion to the pursuit of excellence in Jewish education”.

Soon her dynamic personality led her to be involved in the life of the community. At the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue she helped organize very successful children’s Hanukkah and Purim parties and was later a member of the Board and of the Executive for a number of years.

She was President of the Campagne des Femmes Séfarades, trying to bridge the gap between Ashkenazes and Sefarades, for which she received the Prix Raoul Dayan. Rita continued to forge ties between Jews of all background within Federation CJA. She received numerous awards for her commitment to community work: the Michael Hirsch General Campaign Special Achievement Award for the excellent execution of her work, the Rhoda Leopold award, the Gordon Schwartz award for inspirational leadership, the Chairman award, the Special Community award for exceptional contribution(CSUQ), to name but a few. She was also honoured at Windows on Women and Dining with the Top, two women events.

Wife of our honourary treasurer, Victor, a mother and a grandmother, Rita continues tirelessly to bring passion and enthusiasm to the numerous projects she undertakes.
